Wagner's Adagio for Clarinet and Strings is in fact the middle movement of Heinrich Baermann's Third Clarinet Quintet, op. 23, published in 1821. The history of its misattribution dates back to 1922, when a manuscript copy of the piece was discovered by the Wagner expert, Michael Balling, who published it in 1926 as an early work of Wagner's. The correct attribution was made public in 1964by Hans-Georg Bach.
