Here we have an attractive American child’s plate dating to the 1800s.  The warm yellow color clay on this plate is pleasing.  This is a common plate with no decoration and made for everyday use.  Child’s plates were small, 7 to 8 inches in diameter, plates used by adults were larger, 9 to 10 inches in size.  Measuring 8” in diameter this plate would have likely been hand thrown on a potter’s wheel.  This is in original mint condition with no damage or repairs.  These yellow ware plates were mass produced by potters from the mid to late 1800s and very few were signed.  American marked plates are very rarely found.  When most of these plates were damaged they were simply thrown away as they were not perceived as having any value.  When you buy plates, make sure they are not warped and sit flat as this one does.  This plate is a great piece of yellow ware and a nice addition to any country or yellow ware collection.
