Makataan Watermelon

Latin Name: Citrullus lanatus

A semi-wild watermelon variety of South African origin that was cultivated and consumed by local indigenous communities even before colonization. The tender, small fruits were used as vegetables in stews and porridges, and the ripe fruit was used to make jam. The seeds were consumed roasted. Its huge green mass and large, juicy fruits also make it an excellent fodder plant. A special variety that is rare in cultivation, yet valuable.
