André Delatte

A beautiful very large pair of 1930 French art deco wall sconces in nickel plated solid brass or bronze. Each holds two beautiful droplet shaped shades in frosted moulded-pressed glass by André Delatte. The wall lights are 51 cm (20 inches) high and about 38 cm (15") wide. They project 15 cm from the wall. The Delatte shades are 24.8 cm (9-3/4") high.

André Delatte (1887-1953) was the banker of Muller frères. He became enthusiastic about glassware in the Muller plant and picked up a study in chemistry. After which he opened in 1921 his own glass manufactory Verreries de l'Est in Jarville near the city of Nancy producing mainly vases and lamp shades in colored mottled glass. In 1926 he moved to a larger factory in Nancy. Due to the crisis and the tough competition with Daum the company closed in 1933. Then Delatte together with the industrialist Georges Despordes opened a new glass workshop in the village Rive-de-Gier near Lyon. The new company was named "Art et Verrerie". Pieces produced at this plant were signed "Arvers".  It was not a commercial success. Times had changed and war was in the air. The company soon went bankrupt. From 1935 till 1937 Delatte worked at the artistic department of the SEVBA glass factories.  After the second world war Delatte moved to the south of France and went to work in insurances.

The wall sconces are in very good condition. All four shades are signed "A.Delatte Nancy". This rare model shade is always signed yet the signature is almost always practically invisible. I found it since I know where to look for it. Invisible to the naked eye it shows up a little when masked with transparent tape. The last picture shows a photo of a vase, merely to show you how the Delatte signature looks like. I have re-nickeled and patinated the bronze mounts and rewired the fixtures. For the USA Canada or Japan I placed American candelabra base sockets. For European countries I will rewire them with E14 ones.
