Here we have a rare and seldom found handmade reclining dog mold.  Dating to the mid-1800s this was made using the drape-molding process where the potter pressed clay on a positive relief form.  When the clay was removed it left a negative form inside the finished mold.  While the clay was still damp, the potter pressed three blobs of clay on the underside forming primitive feet.  Measuring 5 ½” wide by 2” in height this mold has no post production damage or repairs.  Another handmade mold using the same process is shown in shown in Lisa McAllister’s Collector’s Guide to Yellow Ware Book I on page 91.
