DESCRIPTION

Antique Japanese sword KOTO - KO-KATANA in KOSHIRAE EDO mounting.

The blade is a KOTO period blade, Late MUROMACHI cca 1450-1550.
It is in great condition. No fatal flaws.

The blade is made out of TAMAHAGANE, the iron ore that's been used in old Japan to make swords.

It is typical shinogi-zukuri shape, with Chu-kissaki tip.

It probably might have been shortened from a Tachi sword. The province is unknown but it appears probably from the BIZEN province due to the typical deep Sori and curvature

It has a tight JIHADA and nice NIOI-DEKI  gunome-midare hamon .

It has no signature - Mumei but has great workmanship.

The saya has been refinished with a snake skin design, it has a nice horn kurikata with shakudo shitodome

The habaki is very nice - silver foil style with 2 patterns also from Early Edo period.

The tsuka has plain iron fittings, cast brass menuki leaf design, silk ito on ray skin, probably late Edo period.

The tsuba is plain dished centre very good quality - hand-forged from Early Edo period cca. 1650

It is a beautiful sword and a excellent piece of Japanese history.

It would be great to add to any Japanese antiques collection.
