About Kennedy half dollars

Kennedy coins are of grief-struck beginnings. In November 1963, President John F. Kennedy, a charismatic and popular president from Massachusetts, the youngest President the country had ever elected, was in a motorcade touring Dallas with the First Lady next to him in the back seat of an open air convertible. An assassin shot and killed President Kennedy there, a horrific scene that was caught on film.  The death of President Kennedy shook the country deeply and it would later come to be known as 'The Day America Lost its Innocence.'

Hardly 5 months afterward, the Kennedy half dollar was rushed into circulation. The first day they were distributed in 1964, there were widespread reports people had lined up for blocks outside banks before they opened. By the end of that day, widespread reports were that all banks ran out of the first Kennedy half dollars that were ever minted - by noon.
