LAVA ROCK FOR ORCHIDS
Lava Rock has been used in Orchid pots for years. it is an excellent base
for an inorganic rock mix for many varieties of Orchids. Because it is
inorganic it will not break down and orchids that resent repotting can be
left in their mix longer. Lava rock is very airy, porous and yet retains water.
The plant roots grow extremely well, you will even notice that Epiphyte
Orchids will attach themselves by the roots to the Lava Rock.
LAVA ROCK IN THE AQUARIUM
Lava Rock is formed from the intense heat of volcanos & has been used
in aquariums for decades. It serves as a Biological Filter allowing water
to pass through and diffuse into the rock for Denitrifying Bacteria that
remove Ammonia and then Nitrites. The many holes in Lava Rock creates
a Natural Porous Environment for the Beneficial Bacteria in the Aquarium
to thrive, much the same way a sponge filter works. Lava Rock is a
natural way of helping to removing toxins and keeping the water clear.
Lava Rock is easy to work into the Aquascape. Because of the surface
texture it stacks well to create "Rock Piles". Small fish,
shrimp and other aquatic life can hide in the rocks for protection,
especially new born fry and shrimplets. It also serves as a place
for the young to find micro food in the first few weeks of life.
Lava Rock can be used as an ideal location for attaching the
Rhizomes of Epiphyte plants like Java Fern, Anubias, Bucephalandra,
Bolbitis or Piptospatha along with others. These Rhizomes can be tied
with string or glued to the Rock using Super Glue Gel. Many of the
aquatic moss plants like Java Moss can be attached to Lava Rock as well.
