                                          Karoo Sunset

Tinus de Jongh was a Dutch landscape painter best known for his realist depictions of South Africa. Born on January 31, 1885 in Amsterdam, de Jongh went on to study as a decorative painter at the Ambachtsschool, where he learned the fundamentals of color and paint mixing. Employing broad palette knife strokes, his early works are fastidiously detailed and somberly colored portrayals of the canals and streets of Amsterdam. De Jongh started to receive critical attention as a young artist when one of his works was purchased by the Stedelijk Museum, and in 1921, he and his family immigrated to South Africa where he created his acclaimed landscape paintings of Cape Town and Cederberg. Today, de Jongh’s works are in the collections of the Pretoria Art Museum in South Africa, the Durban Art Gallery in South Africa, and the Stedelijk Musuem in Amsterdam, among others. The artist died on July 17, 1942 in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
