Antique metal button hook dressing tool has a black handle with an applied silver tin art nouveau piece
suitable for engraving. The tin piece is attached with two primitive nail brads, one on each end.
The tool is 6 3/8" long x 5/8" across the widest part of the handle outside diameter.
Unknown metal that will stick to a magnet. The black handle is made of unknown material. It may be
Bakelite or could be wood. The black color transfers onto a moist cloth if rubbed but does not come off
onto our hands.
Circa early 1900's.
Impossibly small buttons adorned all kinds of clothing during the Victorian period, including boots,
gloves, spats, vests, and collars. Having a button hook handy could make life much easier.
In fact, most people, rich or poor, would have owned a button hook, which they might have carried
on their person–in a pocket or purse or hanging on a chatelaine from one’s waist.
Fun to display in a group of collected button hooks or alone standing in a small cup or hanging on
a wall.
Good used condition showing age and wear. An area of rust and corrosion to the metal on one side of the
shaft near the hook (last photo).
