Photograph Notes: Described as a Common Room in hostel parlance this would have been the stone-flagged farm house kitchen when Dolgoch was a working farm (and a farmhouse of that name has stood here since 1661 or slightly earlier). It is large enough to comprise communal kitchen area (behind me, out of shot), dining areas with pew benches and chairs and tables and sitting-room area around the single source of heat in this wilderness hostel - the woodburner. In winter this is therefore very much the focus of life in the hostel. First thing on entering or in the morning it is essential to light paper, nurse kindling into flame and then add a log to generate a radiant heat that is soon roaring and blazing light and warmth into the otherwise cold and damp room. For the average 21st century hosteller it is a challenge that we are now unused to and Maslow's pyramid or hierarchy of human needs comes once again to the forefront of your mind as you focus on matters that we all too easily take for granted as you scrabble with matches, lighters, firelighters and half-forgotten fire-lighting techniques in order to get and stay warm. No thermostat to turn here, or switch to flick. You must get on your hands and knees like a craven savage and worship at the shrine of man's red flame - whispering curses and blandishments alternatively - until the miracle occurs. Never mind the Internet. Never mind the wheel. Here fire is King. The one invention that matters above all others.
