In the 1920s, under the direction of president Charles S. Ray, Paden City Pottery began manufacturing high quality, semi-porcelain dinnerware. Paden City was a pioneer in the production of semi-porcelain and in using a spraying apparatus to apply colored glazes. A commitment to continually purchase new equipment designed to speed up the production process helped the company weather the Depression. J. W. Mackey joined Paden City in 1930 as its sales manager.
