Stater of Carthage

The original is a coin made of gold or electrum, designed in Greek style. It was struck between 340 and 242 BC. A "stater" is a unit of gold or silver coinage of Ancient Greece. It was usually the principal coin of a City State. On the obverse is the profile head of Persephone, the consort of Hades, god of the world of the dead. She is depicted as crowned with wheat in allusion to her function of presiding over the germination of the grain. On the reverse is a single horse.

In Greek mythology, Persephone, also called Kore or Cora, is the daughter of Zeus and the harvest goddess Demeter, and is the queen of the underworld. Homer describes her as the formidable, venerable majestic princess of the underworld, who carries into effect the curses of men upon the souls of the dead. Persephone was abducted by Hades, the god-king of the underworld. The myth of her abduction represents her function as the personification of vegetation, which shoots forth in spring and withdraws into the earth after harvest; hence, she is also associated with spring as well as the fertility of vegetation
