Photograph Notes: Moored outside the Cambridge Museum of Technology. I have never been on board this vessel, sadly. The hull was built in the 1940s by G Peaks at Stanground, Peterborough and is 30 long overall. Originally named Thetis. The engine is an inverted vertical compound with piston valves by Robey of Lincoln, thought to be built in the 1910s and 3.5" & 7.5" x 6", 300 rpm. The engine and original boiler were sourced from a Robey steam wagon with the engine mounted vertically on turned columns. In 1962 it was acquired by the Reverend D E Brown and renamed Turmoil. In 1966-67 the boiler was replaced with a second hand Merryweather B boiler. It was acquired by Alan Hurst in 1972. Circa 1989 it was reboilered again with a 1960s Clarkson Thimble Tube Boiler Co Ltd boiler, No. 3303. By 2006 it was reported as sunk in the River Great Ouse near Littleport. I was pondering whether to classify it as a boat or a ship. However, it has a deck enclosing the hull so is regarded as a ship. Additional information used above was supplied by Brian Hillsdon.
