No hooks - Won't scratch paint and fits in tight spaces.  Another advantage of no hooks is that if items settle while driving, there are no hooks to fall off and therefore defeat the purpose of the ratchets.  (Things settle or move slightly while driving, which is why it's important to every so often check on the ratchets and sometimes tighten it.  If using hooks, the hooks could get loose and disconnect from wherever you connected it.  Using the endless straps avoids that issue since the item goes around back to the ratchet handle).
