These whimsical folk-art pieces are fine examples of a time-honored traditional handicraft called muñecas. The Aguilar family are world renowned clay figurine folk artists from the village of Ocotlán, Oaxaca, Mexico. These artists capture the joyful celebration of everyday life and cultural traditions of pueblo life in Mexico. 

This figure is in perfect condition & Signed Josephine Aguilar.  But since Josephine is Blind now, it is most likely made by another member of her family.  

It measures 8 3/4 inches tall by 3 1/2 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches deep.

The pieces are crafted from locally collected clays then fired in a pit kiln before being meticulously painted. Each one is a unique one of a kind work of art. Josefina specializes in many styles, some of our favorites are her vendors selling everything from iguanas, dogs, cats and chickens to pots and pans.

This Market lady is displaying a number of different Alebrijes (i.e.; fantastical intricately painted and carved animals that Oaxaca is famous for).  She has a Large Dragon on her head and holding a couple of fanciful other creatures in her hands....
