Magnesium is the eighth most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust, and one of the most abundant minerals in the body. An adult’s body contains around 25g of total magnesium, with more than 60% of these stores found in bones.

Magnesium was first discovered as an element by Joseph Black in 1755, by distinguishing magnesia from lime (magnesium oxide from calcium oxide), and Humphry Davy first isolated the metal in 1808.

Magnesium is naturally present in a variety of foods, including green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and kale, as well as nuts and seeds, beans, soy, brown rice, whole grain bread, fish and meat. It is also found in dark chocolate!

However, only around 30-40% of the magnesium consumed through our diet is absorbed by the body.
