John Alvin Ray (January 10, 1927 – February 24, 1990) was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. Highly popular for most of the 1950s, Ray has been cited by critics as a major precursor to what became rock and roll, for his jazz and blues-influenced music, and his animated stage personality.[1] Tony Bennett called Ray the "father of rock and roll",[2] and historians have noted him as a pioneering figure in the development of the genre.[3]

Raised in Dallas, Oregon, Ray, who was partially deaf, began singing professionally at age fifteen on Portland radio stations. He gained a local following singing at small, predominantly African-American nightclubs in Detroit, where he was discovered in 1949 and subsequently signed to Okeh Records, a subsidiary of Columbia Records. He rose quickly from obscurity in the United States with the release of his debut album Johnnie Ray (1952), as well as with a 78 rpm single, both of whose sides reached the Billboard magazine's Top Hot 100 chart, "Cry" and "The Little White Cloud That Cried".[4]

In 1954, Ray made his first or only major motion picture, There's No Business Like Show Business as part of an ensemble cast that included Ethel Merman and Marilyn Monroe. His career in his native United States began to decline in 1957, and his American record label dropped him in 1960.[5] He never regained a strong following there and rarely appeared on American television after 1973.[6] His fanbases in the United Kingdom and Australia, however, remained strong until his death in 1990 of complications from liver failure.[7]

British Hit Singles & Albums noted that Ray was "a sensation in the 1950s; the heart-wrenching vocal delivery of 'Cry' ... influenced many acts including Elvis, and was the prime target for teen hysteria in the pre-Presley days."[8] Ray's dramatic stage performances and melancholic songs have been credited by music historians as precursory to later performers ranging from Leonard Cohen to Morrissey

All REASONABLE offers are considered - Click on the 'make an offer' button and feel free to negotiate - however, other people interested can still purchase the item pending my reply... just wanted to clarify that because it's happened several times

I’ve bought and sold on eBay since 1997 – collecting and selling just about everything – if you’re looking for something let me know, I’m preparing to downsize portions of my collection.  Please check out my eBay store.  Many great and interesting items will be listed…

I treat everyone fairly and my feedback shows that.  Special requests, wish lists and all inquiries will be answered to the best of my ability.  I may not an absolute expert on anything, but I’m pretty knowledgeable about a lot of things….

Shipping Notes:

-         I try to get everything out the next available postal day after payment clears, but my ‘day job’ is very hectic and chaotic from time to time so there might be a couple days delay until I can get to the post office.  Further with the Federal closing of smaller post offices (mine included), it might take a couple extra days to arrive.

-         If you need it quickly, just ask and I usually have no problem accommodating your wishes.

-         I combine shipping.

-        I sell and ship internationally.  However, once it leaves the United States, buyers assume the risk of the package getting there, if it makes it to that country intact, which is more than fair. Blame France for that one.....

Shipping rates vary due to location of where the item is being sent.  If I offer free shipping on any items it is for the United States only unless noted.

Other Legal-eze:

-         I offer a money back guarantee provided I get the item back in the condition it was sent and it’s within 30 days of receipt of said item.

-         Payment must be made thru eBay.  Unless you are local and can pick the item up.  There are other arrangements that can be made if necessary – feel free to ask.

Happy Hunting and Thank You for your time looking at my ‘trinkets’!
