Photograph Notes: Window engraved with HMS Victoria passing through the Swing Bridge 1890. First Triple expansion warship. Sunk off Tripoli after collision with CAMPERDOWN Vice-Admiral Sir George Tryon ordered 2 parallel columns of 6 and 5 ships to turn inwards to firstly reverse direction and then move to anchor. Due, first to misunderstandings and then reluctance to disobey orders, the two lead ships of the columns collided. CAMPERDOWN's ram penetrated VICTORIA 12ft below the waterline and 9ft into the side. Too many hatches and ventilation ducts were open and she slowly sank by the head. 13 mins after the collision VICTORIA capsized and sank bows first with the loss of 358 crew, 357 were rescued. In 2004 her wreck was discovered in a vertical position with some 90ft of her bow impaled in the mud. Note the cranes of Swan Hunters yard outside; the last cranes were shipped to India in 2009.
