Beautiful antique carved figurine of Shou (壽), also known as Shouxing 壽星, a god of Chinese cosmology also represented as a star of the South Pole, believed to wield power over the life spans of mortals.

According to legend, he was carried in his mother's womb for ten years before being born, and was already an old man when delivered. He is recognized by his high, domed forehead and the peach which he carries as a symbol of immortality.

In his hand, we also see his fabled gourd within which he keeps the elixir of life.

Fine work and special attention paid to details, the pale-green soapstone complimenting the original soapstone stand, carved to resemble a natural rock formation, to which it is attached.

Excellent condition, please carefully regard all photos.
