Photograph Notes: A new monument stands near the Portland War Memorial. It is a simple structure (of local stone, naturally) that records the fate of a ship in WWII. H.M.S. Foylebank was at anchor in the harbour on 4th July, 1940, when she was attacked by Ju 87 Stuka divebombers. She received many hits and of the near 300 crew, 72 were killed. One man, Leading Seaman Jack Foreman Mantle was injured but stayed at his gun, firing throughout. When the ship's power was cut, he carried on using hand gear alone. He died of his efforts and was awarded the first Victoria Cross of the war.
