Photograph Notes: The south front of the house, seen from near the Palladian Bridge. Wilton House is a country estate in the town of Wilton, some 2� miles west of Salisbury. The house was probably built on the site of the medieval Wilton Abbey. At the Dissolution, Henry VIII gave Wilton Abbey and its attached estates to William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke and the estate remains in the family. The first house was built in 1563 and, following a fire in 1647, the house was rebuilt incorporating some surviving parts of the earlier house. There have been alterations in the early 19th and early 20th centuries.
