Photograph Notes: Bodiam Castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, with the permission of Richard II, ostensibly to defend the area against French invasion during the Hundred Years' War. With its square plan, turrets and castellated battlements surrounded by a moat it is probably the pre-eminent English idea of a castle. The castle was dismantled during the English Civil War and was left as a picturesque ruin until its purchase by John (Mad Jack) Fuller of Brightling in 1829. Lord Curzon subsequently bought the castle and donated it to the National Trust on his death in 1925. This is the view from the north-west.
