Here we have a stunning pair of signed Spode vases dating to the 1790s.  Josiah Spode established his company in 1770 in Stoke-on-Trent in England.  These vases are examples of his fine English bone china he developed in the 1790s.  These are finely molded with a wide recessed base widening to the flared rim.  The sides are decorated with black mocha trees and brush on a yellow glazed background.  Above these are applied white sprigged flowers on a reddish-brown band.  Measuring 4 ½” in height these are in original mint condition.  Pottery with the same sprigged ornaments and mocha tree decorations is shown on page 50 in Jonathan Rickard’s definitive book “MOCHA and related dipped wares, 1770-1939.”  The underside of each vase is impressed “SPODE”.  Any collector of mocha would be pleased to add this pair of attractive extremely rare vases to their collection.
