The Story: Superficial people are revealed and drastically changed by circumstance or luck in this tale of death, seduction, blackmail, and theft among British and Americans in Florence, Italy in the turbulent days just before World War II.

Comment: Among the many reasons to see Up at the Villa are the splendid performances by a superb cast. Kristen Scott Thomas does a great job as a poor widow who is courted by many different men. The most interesting of her suitors is Sean Penn, in an interesting but very different role. The story, taken from a novel by W. Somerset Maugham, is clearly secondary, providing both Thomas and Penn the chance to light up the screen.

The film is presented in 16:9 widescreen format with English audio, optional French and Spanish subtitles. Per the label, the running time is 115 minutes. This movie-on-demand MOD archive title on recorded media is new and factory sealed. The DVD disc is Region 1, NTSC format, specifically designed to play on DVD players in North America. It may not play on a PlayStation or similar game device.
