1989 drama The Rainbow starring Sammi Davis, Paul McGann, Amanda Donohoe, Christopher Gable, David Hemmings, Glenda Jackson and directed by Ken Russell.

The Story: In turn-of-the-century England, Ursula (Sammi Davis) leaves home for college, where she is to train as a teacher. During her studies, she finds her passions ignited when she is willingly seduced by a teacher at the college. At first, this dalliance was an act of defiance against her tutor Winifred (Amanda Donahoe). Soon it becomes an overwhelming desire to be fiercely independent and free to experience all of the world's pleasures.

Comment: Ken Russell's quite beautiful film is a rather loose adaptation of the latter part of the D. H. Lawrence novel The Rainbow. It follows an impulsive young Ursula coming of age in turn-of-the-century pastoral England. At school, she is introduced to physical pleasure by her physical education instructress. When disillusioned by her first career attempt (teaching), she has an affair with a young Army officer (Paul McGann). He wants to marry her but Ursula is unable to accept a future of domesticity. She breaks with her lover and eventually leaves home in search of her destiny, or at least the fantasy of her destiny.

This story is a prequel to D. H. Lawrence's Women in Love. The cinematic rainbow is candy-colored - like the false rainbow created by Ursula's father out of edible treats. It provides the opening and closing of the film, as Ursula seeks to go to it. She does not want the real thing - only the fantasy - which is the theme of the film. For the viewers, the film is a treat from beginning to end: the music is superb, the acting captivating, the visuals stunning.

Per the label, the film has 106 minute running time. The film is presented in fullscreen 4:3 format with English audio - no subtitles. This movie-on-demand MOD archive title on recorded media is new and factory sealed. The DVD disc is Region 1, NTSC format, specifically designed to play on DVD players in North America.
