Back around 1990, the Fox network (which at the time was a teeny tiny channel) decided to buck the trend of feel-good family comedies where everything works out in 30 minutes (Family Ties, The Cosby Show, Full House, etc.) by betting on broken and disruptive families, dysfunctional families even. They also appealed more to the working man and the imperfect family. Roseanne, The Simpsons, Married (with Children) were their huge hits. In Roseanne, Dan was more or less a construction-worker and the family lived in near poverty in working class America, with 3 problem kids (one leaves high school early, the other is a tomboy, and the little boy is just...weird.) They parlayed that into a both the NFL and Fox News and the rest is history.
