Photograph Notes: The Hollywood replica of the HMS Bounty heading out onto the River Humber from Albert Dock, Hull, after a stopover for the city's Maritime Festival weekend. The original ship was built at the Blaydes Shipyard near Hull in 1874 and began life as a collier named Bethia before being purchased by the Royal Navy in 1787 and renamed Bounty. It is most famous for a mutiny which took place on 28 April 1789 led by acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian against the captain, William Bligh. The replica ship was built in 1960 for the MGM film 'Mutiny on the Bounty' with Marlon Brando as Fletcher Christian. It has since been used in many films, most recently in 'Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest' starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. The Bounty's visit to Hull certainly captured the public's imagination but for many it was a disappointment. Once in Hull the ship was effectively hidden away at the eastern end of Albert Dock and the only way to see it was by purchasing one of a limited number of tickets sold in the city centre and taking an organised trip to the dock by bus. Many people turned up at the dock only to be turned away and the tickets were sold out by fairly early on Saturday morning. Arrival and departure times were not published and I only got these rather hurried pictures by checking the tide tables and making an educated guess.
