On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique map "Northumberland.".  
The map features original outline and full wash hand colour.   An explanatory key  details, towns, canals, rivers and roads and the distance in miles between towns is shown on the turnpike roads. There is also a reference to the Wards,  a scale of miles & Compass Rose.  

DATE PRINTED: 1830.  The map was issued by Teesdale between 1828 and 1842 but the absence of parliamentary seats, railways and plate numbers indicates that this is an early issue. 

SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately  13.75" x 16.5" (420mm x 345mm), (large) plus margins with a centre fold as issued.

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Henry Teesdale flourished between 1828-1843 and acquired the plates from Robert Rowe's English Atlas and reissued it as his own with alterations under the new title 'New English Atlas'.  Rowe first issued the map in 1816 in his 'English Atlas'.  Teesdale issued the map in his 'New British Atlas' between 1828 and 1842 after which the map reappeared in lithographic transfers until c.1868.  

PROVENANCE: Published in Teesdale's "New British Atlas Containing a Complete Set of County Maps On Which are Delineated All The Principal Cross Roads, Cities, Towns & Most Considerable Villages, Parks, Rivers, Navigable Canals & Railways", c.1830.

TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.

CONDITION: Very good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian maps and prints are subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated.
