Photograph Notes: This peninsula, previously known as Trwyn Du, (=black point) acquired the name Portobello in the 19thC. The sister of Lady Dinorben of Llysdulas had married Carlo Ferdinando Borborne, the son of the King of Naples at Gretna Green against the wishes of the Neapolitan royal family. And no wonder, Carlo was a serial bridegroom - this was his 3rd marriage in 6 months. Lady Dinorben of Llys Dulas (nee Gertie Smythe) keen to flaunt her new Italian connection had a bathing pool built at the newly named Portobello. Her Italian maid, Felicina Contrucci - buried at Llangwenllwyfo churchyard - would accompany her daily to the baths. She would carry a tray with a jug and silver goblet and proceed to the sea to fill the jug for her mistress, who considered drinking sea water a panacea for all ills. Later, the present Italianate-style house was built at Portobello. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/2040818.stm
