Philip II of Macedon, best known as the father of Alexander the Great, was an accomplished king and military commander in his own right. His coinage was issued to finance soldiers and recruit mercenaries, and as a result spread far beyond Greece. Philip II is the first Macedonian king who took the title of Olympic Victor, and indeed thrice over, thanks to his swift and able horses. At the Olympic Games of 356 BC he won the horse-racing contest (the keles). The king was so proud that he represented his horse on his silver tetradrachms. A meander or meandros (Greek: Μαίανδρος) is a decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated motif.It symbolizes infinity and unity.
