Photograph Notes: This old house between Bray and Shankill was the home in the 1840s of Captain John Mayne and his wife (and cousin) Dorothea, daughter of Judge Edward Mayne of [[943640]]. Captain Mayne had served with the 9th Light Dragoons and been seriously wounded during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Rebellion_of_1798. In the previous generation, his father Edward Mayne, a retired officer of the 93rd Foot, living in Co. Monaghan (he was born at [[897137]] ) had helped his neighbour, John Coote of Bellamont, put down the local Oakboys revolt of 1763. In the aftermath both Coote and Mayne were tried for murder and acquitted http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=2_ZstVBZSfIC&lpg=PA1&pg=PA110#v=onepage&q=&f=true John and Dorotheas three sons went out to India where the eldest, Dawson, became an ICS Judge, and his younger brothers, Robert and John, joined the Madras Army (Roberts marriage is noted at [[944521]] ). None of the three brothers returned home from India.
