Photograph Notes: The spire of St Michael's cathedral church, seen from the balcony level of the Upper Precinct. The white area obscuring the lower half is the roof of a shopping mall and its associated, much detested, canopy which is soon to be removed. The 1950s design for the post-war regeneration of the city centre introduced open pedestrianised shopping areas in place of narrow streets. The Upper and Lower Precincts were aligned with the old cathedral spire. The escalator to the West Orchards is a 1980s addition. The balcony area at one time had several shops or upper entrances to multi-floor stores, but they gradually closed. The original two pairs of curving staircases up to each end have been removed, as has the water feature which was below the bridge at the photographer's position. The fifth staircase down to Broadgate at the further end has been replaced with a ramp.
