ABOUT GRENFELL RUGS
Dr. Wilfred T. Grenfell arrived in Labrador and Newfoundland from England. He found the native people to be suffering from poverty, hunger and disease. He began a medical mission there and set up a cottage industry making hooked mats, rugs and handicrafts. This helped alleviate the poor conditions. Silk stockings were sent to the mission from all over to be dyed and used in the making of these rugs. The mats are flawlessly hooked and are highly collectible. Every hole in the burlap was used with the hooking needle, creating the tiny stitches for which the rugs are famous. The Grenfell rugs are true Folk Art!
This original Grenfell rug is so dynamic with such gorgeous design! It is an antique rug. Part of a fantastic collection of Grenfell rugs that we have decided to part with.
It is in excellent condition. The rug is 28 inches by 20 inches. It has its original label which says "GRENFELL HANDICRAFTS HAND MADE IN ST-ANTHONY NFLD".
