The German Democratic Republic (DDR) 1 Pfennig coin is a standard circulation coin issued by the German Democratic Republic between 1960 and 1990. It is made of aluminium and weighs 0.75g. The coin has a diameter of 17mm and a thickness of 1.6mm. The coin has a round shape and a milled finish, with medal alignment. The design is rich with communist symbolism. The obverse of the coin features the State Emblem of the German Democratic Republic, which is a hammer and compass surrounded by a ring of ears with a ribbon and the country name around the rim. The reverse of the coin features the face value of 1 Pfennig, two oak leaves, the mintmark above the value, and the date at the bottom. The edge is smooth. The coin was demonetized on 1 July 1991.
