Kirchhoff’s Circuit Laws

Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law

Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law states that the sum of the emfs (voltage sources) in a closed circuit is equal to the sum of potential drops (voltage drop). Hence, this concept can typically apply to a series circuit.

 

Kirchhoff’s Current Law

Kirchhoff’s Current Law states that the algebraic sum of currents in a network of conductors meeting at a point is zero. That is, the sum of the currents entering this point is equal to the sum of currents leaving this point. This typically applies to a parallel circuit.

These concepts are simple when you identify the type of circuit, but students may find it difficult to apply these concepts to troubleshoot a complex circuit that has a combination of series and parallel components. Once you master the circuit concepts of series and parallel circuits, you should be able to work on complex circuits. This tool has a set of accompanying student exercises to practice and with your imagination, you can explore other possibilities in testing series and parallel circuits. It has a few in-built faults that you can select and help you to master your troubleshooting skills.
