Anne Mercer Celadon Bowl.

A porcelain bowl potted by Anne Mercer and finished with a celadon glaze. Three shaped feet each with matching motifs, the centre of the bowl has a fantastic stylized insect or bird. The bowl’s edge is grooved, it has pinched sections above the feet. It was produced with great skill and craftmanship — a wonderful piece, in excellent condition.
The final photo includes a further piece by Mercer, also for auction.

Similar pieces are held in the MAAS collection, dating from 1979, about the time of this bowl.

Anne Mercer (1945- ) is a South Australian potter who trained as an Art Teacher at the South Australian School of Arts (SASA), also taking evening classes with Bill Gregory in 1967.She took up pottery full-time in 1974, setting up her studio in Glenelg East where she still lives and works. In 1976 she started teaching part-time at SASA, where she also completed a BA in Design (Ceramics) in the first half of the 1980s. Noris Ioannou (Ceramics in South Australia 1836-1985, p.345) describes her techniques as ranging from “landscape’ platters produced in a white crackle shino glaze, which reveals the terracotta body, unglazed dark-bodied, carved bowls, salt-glazed dragon pots and celadon-carved bowls and tea pots”. She also made decorative floral platters using body stains, inlays and coloured slips. Her work may be marked with an impressed ‘AM’ monogram.
She has had a considerable influence on emerging South Australian potters including Gail Barwick and John Odgers

Please examine the pictures carefully, they are part of the description. While I do my best to reproduce the true colours of the pieces, they will vary slightly from system to system, and in actual viewing they will vary under differing lighting. All white spots are purely light reflections from the camera flash.
