Vintage wooden printing block from India, the early 1920s-1960s. Wooden blocks like these were used to produce the hand-printing textiles for which India has a famous reputation in the global textile industry. First, the desired image is drawn on paper and then transferred to hardwood slabs, at which time, a very accomplished artist painstakingly cuts, chisels, and carves each item by hand. Each color is then applied to the selected fabric which requires a specific block image ( one block for one color ). Once the block becomes slightly worn causing the pattern to lose its original “crispness” it is retired or discontinued. Limited, only by your imagination, these vintage pieces can be used to accent a shelf, or hung as a grouping on an accent wall. They can also be modified as a key ring holder, “art time” for the children, or just out as a conversation piece.
