Giulio Confalonieri’s ‘Maya’ fruit bowl belongs to a series of baskets and trays designed in the early 1970s by a group of Italian graphic designers for Alessi. Collectively known as ‘Exhibition Design’ (Giulio Confalonieri, Silvio Coppola, Franco Grignani, Bruno Munari and Pino Tovaglia), these designers explored the crossover between graphic and industrial design, and for Alessi, marked a radical departure from previous product styles. “Times have changed: The boundaries of graphics have opened to explorations that go beyond visual communication, to seek new types of plastic form, in a new design” — Pino Tovaglia
