Unique Vtg Fariseo Animal Queretaro Mask Carnival Mask Mexico Folk Art - Rare

This is simply an amazing vintage Mexican mask. Very unique and hard to find.

These masks are worn for Easter by the Otomi people of El Doctor, for carnivals in Queretaro.

This mask was made over a traditional ceramic mask mold using layers of glued fabric. The string mop hair (ixtle fiber) covers the head and shoulders and falls to the waist. The added cloth conceals  the dancer's face. During the procession and dances the masked ones follow the event, harassing and mocking the religious column.

I think this mask represents a leopard or hyena/fox.

Probably from the 50s.

In excellent vintage condition. Some stain on the fabric as shown in the last photos. Wear consistent with age.

Size: 8" x 6"

Wig: 26" long

Marked inside the mask: Queretaro

NOTE: Please refer to photos for more detailed condition. They are part of the description. Any defects not mentioned but visible in the pictures will be considered as "described".
