If your wondering why your getting chatter and poor surface finish with your standard fly cutter you have to look at its construction. Most adjustable fly cutters use a 1/2" tool bit that was designed to be used on a lathe or in a boring bar. Hang that 1/2" tool bit out a little to get a larger width of cut and you create chatter, it's not rigid enough. There are other obvious factors that can cause a poor finish such as sloppy spindle bearings in the machine, an out of tram head, or sloppy ways and or gibs. Another issue is with how the cutter is attached to the machine. A big cylindrical disk is very rigid but the 1/2" or 3/4" or even 1" shaft is not and the stiffness or rigidity of the tool just makes the shaft flex more creating chatter and poor finish. Collet type holders should never be used with a fly cutter and most end mill holders are too long and create too much leverage because they hang down too far. For best results the cutting edge of a fly cutter should be as close to the machines spindle as possible.

Brand new fly cutter body and 5" bar set. Comes with one R8-Arbor, 1  5" x1" thick adjustable bar.    Comes complete with 1 TIN Coated TNMG 432 carbide insert, 2 insert screws  and 1 1/2"-20  socket head cap screw to mount the cutter body to the arbor. See link at the bottom for inserts.

Can be used to cut a wide variety of materials  from aluminum and plastics to tool steels.

Uses TNMG 432 series un-coated inserts for milling cast iron, aluminum and plastic and TNMG 432 TIN coated inserts for steel and tool steels.

Cut depths of up to .030"  in steel and .080" +  in aluminum and plastics. Can also be used to rough workpieces and remove scale, when a large surface area needs to be covered. An excellent tool for weldments and flimsy hard to hold workpieces. Works great for facing or skimming cylinder heads and decking engine blocks.

When using for skimming cylinder heads or decking an engine block this tool is the choice to get it done right the first time. Using a scrap practice head made of the same material you intend to cut, is recommended to help you to fine tune your feed and spindle speed rates for your machine. Once the rpm and feed rates have been established one or 2 light passes will get the job done fast. A single TNMG insert should last through many projects. No need to buy and hand sharpen tool bits!

In many cases this tool will eliminate the need for surface or Blanchard grinding, and is great for 1 pass per side squaring of workpieces.

The bar is adjustable and reversible and can be used to cut inside of clevises and the underside of overhanging work pieces. If  bar is reversed the spindle must be run in reverse (ccw)

All of our fly cutter products including the bars and cutter bodies are plated with clear zinc for corrosion resistance and are cryogenically treated (prior to manufacturing) for stability and to reduce vibration.
