Pair of vintage Stehli Frères prints after iconic Swiss landscapes by well-known artist and architect Nicolas Markovitch (Serbian, 1894-1964). The prints depict the village of Findelen and the Matterhorn in the Zermatt area of Switzerland and the Hohnegg resort in the village of Sass-Fee, Switzerland. Markovitch used several pseudonyms including A. Marc or just Marc. Markovitch lived and worked in France and is primarily known for his paintings of buildings and cityscapes, as well as landscapes and seascapes. The prints were made by the Stehli Frères company of Zurich, Switzerland which produced high quality prints on a variety of subjects throughout the 1930s and 1940s.

Prints are to paperboard and appear to have penciled borders drawn around them and penciled titles or descriptions in the margins. It is not known who drew the borders and/or wrote the titles/descriptions in pencil. Prints also feature the Stehli Frères company logo and a printed pseudonym signature of Nicolas Markovitch (“Marc”). The prints measure approximately 4 1/8" x 5 7/8" and the paperboard backings measure approximately 6” x 8”. Prints are unframed. The exact age of the prints is unknown, but they may be from the 1930s-1940s. Prints seem to be of very high quality, almost resembling actual watercolor paintings.

Prints appear to be in very good to excellent used condition with signs of age and wear, such as fading, yellowing, and some spots. The print of the Hohnegg resort in Sass-Fee has a clean cut edge whereas the print of Findelen and the Matterhorn has a somewhat ragged edge. The paperboard backing of both prints appear to be in good used condition, with signs of age and wear, such as fading, yellowing, stains, stray marks, spots, discoloration, ink or paint marks and/or smudges, scrapes, abrasions, indentations, creases, folds, bends and/or tears in the corners, wear on edges and corners, and surface tears on the backs. The name “K. Crouch” is written on the backs of the paperboard. Estate sale find. Prints would look great framed!
