Description:

A scarce copy of the 1758 printing of this epic poem, attributed to the minstrel Blind Harry (c.1440-1492), celebrating the life and achievements of William Wallace (c.1270-1305). This volumes comes with excellent provenance, the armorial bookplate at the front bearing the Wallace coat of arms.

Bound in full leather, spine with five raised bands and gilt title on morocco label. Externally a little rubbed with bumping to corners. Upper joint split leaving board near-detached, only holding very weakly. Armorial bookplate of the Wallace family to front pastedown. Title-page is present in this copy (see below), with two prior owners' signatures in ink, one dated 1846. Text largely printed in black letter. Pages with age-toning/browning throughout, some spotting, handling marks, and other blemishes. C2 with scuff/tear within text, 4F2, 4P, and 5A2 with old repair to lower corners, 5C with approx. 4cm closed tear to fore-edge encroaching into text. Elsewhere, a scattering of short marginal tears, occasional small holes within text, and very minor worming to margins of a few leaves. ESTC: T107015 - noting that the "title-page was not issued with all copies of the edition".
