Here we have an iconic Sunset Magazine cover by Maynard Dixon (1875-1946, American). The print has a signature to lower left, signed L. Maynard Dixon. We are not handwriting experts and cannot authenticate this signature as Dixon's. The piece is matted in a simple wooden frame. The print measures 6 5/8" by 9 3/4". The frame measures 13 1/4" by 17 1/4". Best known for his Western land and skyscapes. He began doing illustrations in 1893. This print is from his illustration for Sunset: A Magazine of the Border in February 1903. Note: The last photo is of the back of the cover. PROVENANCE: From the personal collection of journalist and editor E. Michael Pakenham (1933-2018). Pakenham was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1977 for his editorials in the Philadelphia Inquirer. He began his newspaper career at the Chicago Tribune and went on to work as an editor at the New York Herald, The New York Daily News, the Sunday Correspondent, and Spin Magazine. He retired from the from the position of Book Editor at the Baltimore Sun in 2004.
