A plan showing Helsbury Castle, a hill fort dating from the Iron Age, some 2500 or so years ago. The fort is univallate, having a single rampart and ditch. The rampart extends to 4m in height. The hill fort stands on Michaelstow Beacon.

SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 19 x 13 cm, 7.5 x 5.25 inches (medium) plus margins. 

PROVENANCE:  A plan published in 'The Parochial and Family History of the Deanery of Trigg Minor, in the County of Cornwall.', by Sir John Maclean. Published by Nichols & son, 1873. 

TYPE: Antique lithograph printed on paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Michaelstow village and parish lie on the western side of Bodmin Moor in a very pretty setting. Of archaeological interest in the parish is Helsbury Castle, a hill fort dating from the Iron Age, some 2500 or so years ago. The fort is univallate, having a single rampart and ditch. The rampart extends to 4m in height. The hill fort stands on Michaelstow Beacon (208m/684ft). There are the ruins of a chapel within the hill fort. The chapel was dedicated to St Syth.
