A hydraulic ram pump is a device designed to pump water up hill. Does not require fuel or electricity. Allows you to pump water from a creek or river up hill. Can even be used with a pond or lake if set up with correct pre fall. There are some very good YouTube videos on the proper set up and easy install of a ram pump.
In order to setup the ram pump you will need some lengths of standard pvc pipe easy to set up. This is called the drive pipe and it leads from your source to the pump, and should be straight without angles or elbows. The Drive pipe needs to be the same size as the waste valve on the pump 3/4". It is recommended that the drive pipe be longer than 18 feet and shorter than 80 feet and be straight without turns or angles. A standard garden hose works great for the delivery hose after your ram pump. (Some additional components are helpful to reduce maintenance such as a debris screen at the intake end of the drive pipe and/or a silt collection bucket that also doubles to eliminate air in the drive pipe (5 gallon plastic bucket works great).
Now that the required pipe is installed you will need to start the pump. Initially you will need to press the brass swing valve with your finger to allow pressure to build. Once pressure has built up the pump will cycle on its own.
There are numerous good videos online to help you visualize the simple set up of your ram pump. We recommend watching videos for easy to avoid problems such as air in your drive pipe and/or adequate flow.
