On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) folding antique map "A New Map of the County of Monmouth. Divided into Hundreds.  London. Printed for C. Smith No. 172 Strand Corrected to 1825."  Offered with original hand colour.

The map provides much detail and includes information regarding the turnpike and mail roads as well as distances between market towns and the canal network. Original outline and wash colour to show the county's hundreds which are also listed in a numbered key. A beautiful example. 


DATE PRINTED1825 (dated on the print) from a plate first published in 1804.  All editions are uncommon but those after 1808 are particularly scarce.

SIZE: The printed area of the view, including titles, is approximately 510 by 450mm (20 by 18 inches) (large) plus margins dissected into 12 sections and mounted and cloth.  

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER:  Drawn by Charles Smith, a stationer, publisher and mapseller, working in the Strand from about 1800 onwards. Charles Smith was a publisher, engraver as well as a map and globe seller working at No. 172 (Corner of Surrey Street ) Strand, London from 1803 to 1862. A rival of John Cary producing very similar styled detailed maps. His fine maps published in the New English Atlas published in 1804 was a model for Cary's New English Atlas published five years later in 1809. They were the first county maps showing longitudes based on the meridian at Greenwich Observatory. 

PROVENANCE:  This map was first published in Smith's "New English Atlas Being A Complete Set of County Maps". Smith was a stationer and mapseller working in the Strand, London, from about 1800 onwards and continued the standard set by John Cary for precise, detailed maps, finely produced and without the embellishments of the previous century.  This example being sold as part of a set of folding county maps.

TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper dissected and mounted on linen.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side which is blank.

CONDITION: Very good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian maps and prints are subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated. I offer a no questions asked return policy.  The back has a library label not visible from the front.
