Golf is a game of variables and the putting green is no exception: everything from the grass species/height/grain/cut/surface moisture (dew), local weather conditions, soil moisture saturation, slope, drainage and many other factors influence how far a golf ball travels from one putting green to the next. Fortunately, Edward S. Stimpson invented a simple device in the 1930's, which has the ability to condense this myriad of variables into an accurate, objective and statistically-valid measure known as the green speed (expressed as a distance).
A Speedmeter is useful not only for golf course superintendents and greenkeepers alike for keeping green speeds consistent but also for golfers as knowledge of the green speed allows for more accurate adjustment of putting strength to ensure putts will travel the distances intended. It is also suitable for measuring the green speeds of lawn bowling greens.
Additionally for golfers, when combining a Speedmeter with the 'Practice Anywhere' feature of the Golf Companion app (download details above), it is possible to practice your putting distance control for any green speed all from the comfort of your home - greatly increasing the opportunities you have to improve your putting technique at the same green speed of your local golf course.
DP Golf offers two Speedmeter models: the Classic and the Compact. The Classic is based on the original design by Edward Stimpson and requires a relatively flat putting green area of around 1 foot by 10 feet however such large flat areas aren't always available for many greens. The Compact requires a flat area of just 1 foot by 5 feet so the Compact can be advantageous for such situations. Both can be used to measure the green speed in exactly the same way however with the Compact the average measurement recorded is simply multiplied by a factor of two (2x).
