ANTONIUS GENUENSIS [ANTONIO GENOVESI (1712-1769)]

Antonius Genuensis, also known as Antonio Genovesi (1712-1769), was an Italian philosopher and economist. He played a significant role in the Italian Enlightenment and is considered one of the leading figures in 18th-century economic and philosophical thought.

Genovesi was a proponent of utilitarianism and liberal economic thinking. He believed that the pursuit of individual happiness was the ultimate goal of human life and advocated for economic freedom as a means to achieve social well-being.

As a professor at the University of Naples, Genovesi founded the first chair of political economy in Italy. He also wrote extensively on ethics, politics, history, and economic theory. His most notable work is "Lezioni di Commercio" (Lessons on Commerce), published in 1765, where he addressed topics such as trade, markets, wealth production, and distribution.

Genovesi contributed to the spread of Enlightenment thinking in Italy and influenced future generations of economists and philosophers. His advocacy for individual liberty and the importance of social welfare made him a prominent figure in the intellectual landscape of his time.
