Vetiver essential oil has an earthy aroma, slightly similar to that of patchouli with a touch of lemon. It is a thick amber liquid with a scent that like the patchouli improves with age. The essential oil is distilled from the roots of a tall densely tufted perennial grass. An important base-note perfume constituent, the oil provides a rich and tenacious characteristic that serves as a strong and long lasting base for oriental blends. Vetiveria zizanioides is a perennial growing to 2 m (6ft 7in). It is frost tender. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs). Vetiver is known as the 'oil of tranquillity' due to its relaxing and calming properties on the mind, it also strengthens, nurtures and revitalizes the body. It restores balance to hormonal and emotional conditions, and rejuvenates both mind and body. It has a unique earthy fragrance which has a grounding and centring effect on the mind which helps pacify anger and irritability. Vetiver is known as Khus in India, pronounced Khas.
